Südstaatenschmonzette

Datum:01.01.1970 01:00 - Rating: 2/5

Wie sagt die Autorin in ihrem herzzerreißendem Nachwort: I dont presume to think that I know what it really felt like to be a black woman in Mississippi, especially in the 1960s. Das wiederum hat sie scharf erkannt. Aber warum hat sie dann nicht einfach die Finger von dem Stoff gelassen?

Great book, great author....

Congratulations to Ms. Stockett for her first novel. It is exceptionally well written and above all tells a very good story. I was captivated and couldn't put it down. The lives of three women in the south, during the early sixties intertwine in the most fascinating way. For us Europeans it is extremely educating to read about the racial situation especially in the south of the USA during this time. We sometimes have a distorted point of view. This book makes you cry and laugh at the same time, but it also makes you scream in anger. Great book, great read, great author.

SLAVERY DAYS

Datum:01.01.1970 01:00 - Rating: 4/5

"Get the house straightened up and then go and fix some of that chicken salad."

These were the days when white people treated their black servants like slaves. They never ate the same food, they had to work long tough hours doing housekeeping and cooking to boot. train their children, and not to forget to use the outside bathroom.

These families will continue to do this until the day when one of their white daughters Skeeter returns to her parents' home and decides to evaluate these 'working' conditions.

It hurts her to see how they treat the help and she sets up a meeting with the staff from various households to have them have their say.

And a lot is said.

Between Abilene, Skeeter and Minnie, the wheels start rolling and everything come out in the wash.

This book will set you to thinking as it did the families, who when were awakened looked at the consequence as an act of betrayal.

A fantastic book

Datum:01.01.1970 01:00 - Rating: 5/5

Of all the books I read this summer, The Help was my favorite. A wonderful story about three woman, who each tell their own story as well as the story shared by all three. It is interesting to read about african american maids working for the well-to-do whites in the south of the USA in the 50s and 60s. Their perspective on things is a story seldom, if ever, told. Their wit, their charm, their humor, their anger and their heartbreaking stories will certainly move you. The white woman in this story wants to write a book about black maids in the south and is suddenly confronted by racial issues that she had never given a thought to. The danger she finds herself in simply by interviewing black maids is shocking to her (and the reader) and gives a new perspective on the racial situation at that time.

The Help is a book that will move you, infuriate you, make you laugh out loud and fascinate you. Absolutely one of the best books I've ever read!
